Description
Does God really condemn loving homosexual relationships? Is the chasm separatingChristianity from gays and lesbians too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? These questions and more are answered in this award-winning documentary, which brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture – and reveals that religious anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a misinterpretation of the Bible.
A powerful, thought-provoking meditation on what it means to be gay and Christian, Daniel Karslake’s acclaimed documentary features five families who have confronted a crisis of faith upon the discovery of their child’s homosexuality. Among those profiled are former Congressman Dick Gephardt and his wife, Jane, who humourously talk of their daughter Chrissy’s athletic ability. Chrissy meanwhile recounts her recollections of growing up Catholic and what that did to her psyche. Another parent discusses how her transformation into a gay right’s advocate occurred during the humiliating task of scrubbing vile graffiti, meant for her son, off her driveway.
Perhaps one of the most affecting and telling moments comes during recollections of openly gay Bishop-elect Gene Robinson’s consecration. An event that spawned death threats, Robinson’s ex-wife and his elderly parents, all of whom attended, speak of the fact that Robinson had to wear a bulletproof vest under his vestments. As chilling as this story is, Robinson’s own words describe his parent’s faith reveals the film’s uplifting tone: “My parents are probably the two best Christians I know and they don’t do it because they ought to do it, they just do it because it’s who they are.”
Offering healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity, this landmark film “boldly takes on a loaded topic and examines it both intellectually and emotionally; the result may well leave you blinking away a few tears.” (Seattle Times)
